Who We Were
Sustainable Communities Worldwide was formerly known as Humanitarian International Services Group (HISG). Founded the day before 9/11 on 9/10/01, HISG has worked in over 130 countries in the last 13 years. We started out as a team of business leaders wanting to bring business practices to the humanitarian space. We learned a lot about what does, and does not work.
Then we had a breakthrough revelation; a single thought that changed our course, a paradigm shift that narrowed our focus.
We realized that free handouts create dependency. Dependency stifles innovation and creativity, destroys dignity, and discourages ownership and personal responsibility. At that moment, we realized we could not keep going down the same road we had traveled for 13 years. We needed to change.
Who We Are Now
We share and support implementation of asset-based development models with local leaders to empower self-sustainability. We raise awareness about when helping hurts, and we facilitate rethinking sustainability. We encourage catalysts and thought-leaders to join our mission to spark a renaissance in how we help people and build self-sustainable communities.
We Don’t Just Give People Fish. We Help Others Think About Fishing.
